Hacienda Tejeda was designed for living and entertainment. The Hacienda sits on what used to be a corn field on the flat plains of Mission, Texas. Views and scents of the neighboring orange groves became the focal point of the new compound.
Covered walkways and outdoor living areas, oriented towards the prevailing breezes, surround the main courtyard, creating cool, shaded entertaining areas away from the harsh sun. A “sombredero,” or shaded rooftop deck, captures the prevailing breezes and provides incredible views of the orange grove.
High quality construction and low cost materials were combined with a simple design to achieve a responsive and livable structure.
Locally available materials included tile floors and roofs, large stone elements, custom doors, ironwork, lighting, and stepped-plaster walls. Respect for handcraft and human-scale spaces unite the various forms.
